Research into the Fashion Journalism industry


The media area that i am most interested in working in is Journalism, more specifically Fashion Journalism. Fashion Journalism is a component of fashion media with a focus on writing and photojournalism. Fashion Journalists focus mostly on trends and events while maintaining relationships with designers or stylists and having a good knowledge of fashion history, whilst also staying up to date on current industry trends. Fashion Journalists are either employed full time by a publication or they submit articles on a freelance basis

The companies that are active in the fashion journalism industry are fashion magazines, these include British Vogue, Cosmopolitan, GQ, Dazed, Glamour, Stylist, Marie Claire, InStyle, i-D, Good Housekeeping, Grazia, Elle and many more.

Careers that are available within the fashion journalism industry


Fashion Publicist - A fashion publicist is a public relations specialist who helps clothing companies, cosmetic industries and retail stores build strong public images, encouraging sales and consumer interest. Fashion publicists often spend much of their time writing press releases and conducting press conferences to distribute fashion news through television, newspapers, radio, direct mail, social networking sites and internet fashion websites. Generally, the skills that would be required for this job would be a bachelor's degree in fashion journalism or public relations.

Fashion Writer - One of the most common careers in fashion journalism is becoming a fashion writer, they create content for newspapers, magazines, websites, radio and television. Many fashion writers work with photographers to create pop culture content about designers, celebrities, athletes and fashion models. This job often involves interviewing high profile celebrities and reporting to editors who review your content and make revisions for the final publication. A university degree in fashion journalism or fashion merchandising is highly recommended for this career.

Fashion Editor - A fashion editor helps to create and produce fashion related content for wide public distribution. Supervisory experience and project management skills are needed as this job role involves overseeing the work of fashion writers. Fashion editors often specialize in a particular field such as cosmetics, clothing, footwear, handbags, athletic wear, makeup, undergarments, jewelry or other fashion accessories. As a fashion editor, your job responsibilities will include presenting fashion related information in a creative way so that readers will pay for magazine subscriptions or purchase beauty products. Many fashion editors have a bachelor's degree in fashion journalism, fashion design or fashion merchandising.

Fashion Marketer - If you have an interest in promoting beauty products, clothing and other fashion accessories you may consider a job as a fashion marketer. Fashion marketers create advertising campaigns to increase public awareness, convincing consumers that they need to purchase certain products and particular brands. As a fashion marketer, you might spend part of your time analyzing statistics and evaluating consumer satisfaction reports to determine which products are the most popular. Another thing fashion marketer's must do is analyze age-related, gender-specific and socio-economic trends. The minimum level of education that is necessary to secure a job as a fashion marketing manager is a bachelor's degree.
