About Channel 4

  • Channel 4 is a British public service television network that is free to air.
  • The channel 4 headquarters are in London with a national headquarters in Leeds and creative hubs in both Glasgow and Bristol.
  • Channel 4 was established to provide a fourth television service to the United Kingdom in addition to BBC 1, BBC 2 and ITV.
  • Channel 4 is publicly owned and advertising funded.
  • Channel 4 was originally owned and operated by The Independent Broadcasting Authority.
  • The station is now owned and operated by Channel 4 Television Corporation which was established in 1990 and came into operation in 1993.
  • Channel 4 Television Corporation is a public corporation of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
  • In 2010, Channel 4 extended service into Wales and became a UK wide television channel.
  • Channel 4 currently has the UK's biggest free streaming service called 'All 4'.
  • Channel 4 has a network of 12 television channels.
  • Channel 4 was created in 1982.
  • Channel 4's purpose is to create change through entertainment, they do this by representing unheard voices, challenging with purpose and reinventing entertainment.
  • Because channel 4 are commercially funded but publicly owned, they are able to offer independent and distinctive universal content reflecting the interests of different communities across the UK.
  • Channel 4 commissions UK content from the independent production sector and currently works with around 300 creative companies across the UK every year.
  • Channel 4 have the youngest skewing public service channel in the UK and they reach more 16 - 34 year old's than any other commercial broadcaster across streaming and TV.
  • Film4 films have produced 144 Oscar nominations and 37 wins in the channels 39 year history.

Channel 4 aim to create change in the wider world through all of their activities: from TV, to streaming, social media, film and the day to day roles at channel 4. The impact that channel 4 has on society, on viewers, on British culture, on the creative industries and on the wider economy is why channel 4 is and will continue to be different.
